What is EnenKio and Eneen-Kio Atoll?

The Kingdom of EnenKio, its short name being EnenKio, is a sovereign nation which was first conceived in 1987. It began to emerge in 1993, was formally established in 1994, but in truth, has its roots enmeshed in over two thousand years of mostly unrecorded oral history of primitive human culture, religion and tradition. Marshallese living during the pre-European contact period in the Ratak ("Sunrise" in Marshallese) chain of atolls referred to them as the Ratak En, as they were part of a single cohesive kingdom (Marshallese chiefdom) and part of the whole of "Aelon Kein", meaning "these islands of ours", which today is called the Marshall Islands. The Northern Ratak atolls and islands existed as cohesive state under a single ruler at the time of German colonization in the Marshalls. "E-n-e-n-K-i-o" is a spelling derived from the native name of the northernmost Marshallese atoll, Eneen-Kio Atoll, which was also once written as Enen-kio.

The three main islands of Eneen-Kio Atoll, Peale I., Wake I. and Wilkes I., are built upon a coral reef encircling the top of a small extinct volcano. They form the most northern geographic feature of the Ratak Chain of Pacific Ocean islands. The archipelago stretches through the Marshall Islands toward the Equator for nearly nine hundred miles. Eneen-Kio Atoll comprises a total area of approximately six and one-half square miles, nearly 60% of which is covered by an pristine ocean lagoon. More about coral atolls.

Discovered by aboriginal native sailors in search of food in what is today considered part of Micronesia, these islands held a special role in their society, rituals and customs. Marshallese chiefs were extensively and intricately tattooed with tools fashioned from bones taken after human sacrifice. However, substitute implements could be found in the wing of a large sea bird. Unapproachable in settled areas, these birds were easier prey at Eneen-Kio Atoll.

The perilous journey in native dugouts was long and difficult. Small tools made of sticks and shells were used as primitive but effective navigation instruments. Coconuts and breadfruit may have been the only source of liquid nourishment. Any man who completed the trip was rewarded; his life was spared and honor was bestowed by the chief.

Following rediscovery of Micronesia by western explorers and an influx of Christian missionaries, human sacrifices were replaced by rituals of bravery and manhood. A successful voyage to Eneen-Kio Atoll was evidenced by the recovery and return of a local small orange (kio) flower found nowhere else in the islands. Hence, the name Eneen-Kio (or Enen-kio) means: "Island of the orange flower" in the Marshallese language.

Where is Eneen-Kio Atoll ?

Situated near 19° 18´ N x 166° 35´ E, Eneen-Kio Atoll is approximately 2300 statute miles west of the Hawaiian Islands and 2000 miles from Japan. The nearest island neighbor is Bok-ak Atoll of the Marshalls group, some 300 miles to the south. While early western maps showed Eneen-Kio by such names as San Francisco, Lamira, Disclerta, Halcyon, Helsion, Wilson and others, modern maps, globes and nautical charts show the atoll by the name of WAKE ISLAND.

The depth of the lagoon ranges from under 1 ft. (dry at low tide) to about 15 ft., the deepest part being in the northwest corner. A boat channel between Wake and Wilkes Islands has an average width of 100 feet and a depth from 9 to 21 feet. Maximum tidal velocity is 4 knots. The channel terminates in a basin 800' x 300' with depths of 5 to 16 feet and is not well maintained. A 400' long boat landing wharf is located in the southwest corner with depths alongside of 13 to16 feet. There is a marine railway in the northwest corner of the basin with tracks terminating in the lagoon at a depth of 7 feet. This permits the hauling of some smaller boats for repairs or maintenance. See it from space.

    His Majesty King Remios Hermios

Who Governs the Kingdom of EnenKio ?

Following a long procession of Marshallese chiefs, perhaps as many as 80 generations, one of whom traditionally held rank as Paramount Chief (Iroijlaplap) over any given area, Remios Hermios has now ascended to that position over all of the northern atolls of the Ratak Archipelago of the Marshall Islands. Eleven atolls from Eneen-Kio to Aur scattered over 100,000 square miles of ocean comprise the Ratak En; only EnenKio is an independent sovereign state.

Eneen-Kio Atoll, illegally claimed in 1899 by an armed United States war ship, while under treaty to Germany. The atoll was never incorporated into the Republic of the Marshall Islands when the Marshalls emerged  in 1979 from United Nations Trust Territory status to gain its independence. After the Compact of Free Association between the RMI and the United States went into effect in 1986, funds and assistance for development and self-determination of the Ratak En were supposed to be made available. However, when it became evident to Iroijlaplap Murjel Hermios that virtually all development was centered in Majuro and Ebeye, he began to search for a way to help the Ratak En people and regain his lawful inheritance of Eneen-Kio Atoll. He established a charitable trust in 1989 for the Ratak En. When EnenKio was established in 1994, Murjel Hermios became the First Monarch of EnenKio.  Following his death in December 1998, his brother Remios became Second Monarch.

Since then, a fledgling government has been working diligently under a Constitution with King Hermios serving as head of state and those loyal to the causes of freedom, justice, dignity and peace for Eneen-Kio Atoll hold positions of authority. The administration of various internal and state affairs are undertaken by six Ministers, who, with the king, collectively make up an Executive Council. Founded on the principals of unalienable natural human rights, the common law of man, the Law of Nations and constitutional mandates in pursuit thereof, the government has set up a central bureau in the Foreign Trade Mission of the EnenKio Delegation in Honolulu, Hawaii, and  offices in Europe, South America, Middle East and Oceania.

Opportunities or Challenges ?

The government of EnenKio is determined to peacefully regain occupation of Eneen-Kio Atoll to benefit the king, EnenKio citizens and any persons who desire freedom from oppressive political or social systems. Two precedents for the return of Eneen-Kio Atoll were set during this decade: (1) when the United States Congress passed the 1993 Apology Bill (Public Law 103-150) for the 1893 American-supported overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy, and (2) the subsequent relinquishment of the island of Kaho’olawe in the Hawaiian Islands to native Hawaiians by the U.S. Navy. Steps are now being taken to assert the right and title of the new King Hermios on a similar basis. Worldwide efforts to establish diplomatic relations and recognition of the Marshallese culture are being made in many regions of the world.

In preparation for settlement, the plans and development include immigration, diplomatic and commercial programs. Ministers of the Executive Council are actively seeking to establish relationships with individuals and firms to exchange ideas, goods, privileges and services.

Information on levels of participation in EnenKio’s political process, forms of individual documentation and international trust services are available through the Consulate and elsewhere in this site.

Commercial programs involve the enrollment of ships, licensing of banks, business Enrollment Act.pdf organizations, trusts, telecommunications, an International Spaceport and satellite launch facility, banking and financial services, high technology development companies, natural resource exploration, risk management services and establishment of an international free trade zone.
